We had the annual Reading Rocks Celebration today, Monday Aug 1! It was a huge success and we actually enjoyed having a smaller number of children than normal so we could give them more individual attention.
In prep for the party, Andy, Shannon, Trish, Lindsay and I worked at the church from about 7-11 pm last night to sort and prep supplies and everything for the party. It is a lot of work and a very sweaty job in the basement of an un-air-conditioned church—BUT oh so much fun when you are working with a team you adore! We laughed and had a wonderful time sorting the abundance of God’s blessings poured out in crayons, paper, pencils and MORE!
A HUGE thank you to so many of you who have donated money, backpacks, socks/underwear, or supplies!!!
We began with snacks and gathering as always and then went in for the awards ceremony where each child is recognized for their reading achievement. We also give out our TOP awards…6 Fruit of the Spirit Awards, and 3 top points earners {younger reader with a helper, younger independent reader, and chapter book reader}.
Kyler won the most points for younger reader with a helper!!!!
The kids then go to the playground and are called in a few at a time to choose their backpack and get a huge bag of supplies!
This year they each got 3 pairs of socks and underwear as well.
They also got to choose 3 books from a book table we had of donated {really nice} books…this was new this year and they loved it!
It is always a joy to hear them complain about how heavy their bags are…knowing they are overflowing with wonderful stuff they need for school!
They are all so excited and thankful. I even heard one 10 year old boy scream in excitement over his new dictionary!!!
It was a joy to be able to bless them and we couldn’t do it without the support we receive from YOU! We can’t thank you enough!
Remember we still collect school supplies year round, you can visit this post for our on going needs. We give out another batch of supplies at Christmas and also at Family Night monthly. We now have excellent storage so if you want to hit the sales this year we will definitely use it whenever you get it to us! If you are near a Staples, they always have great deals this time of year!
